This Friday (Sept. 29th) is Orange Shirt day in Regina Public Schools. Students are encourages to wear an orange shirt or something with orange on that day to recognizes the harm done to generations of children by residential schools and also as a commitment to ensure that every child matters. Orange shirt day is also a commitment to reconciliation, anti-racism and anti-bullying. Our class will also be participating in the annual Terry Fox walk with Mme Proulx Grade 3 class (partnering with our reading buddies). Students will be outside from 2:15 - 3:00 p.m.
In other news, our class pyjama / electronic / movie afternoon has been moved from Sept. 28th to October 5th due to my medical appointment that afternoon. With only two report cards this year, it is important to stay on top of how your children are doing at school and to help them set goals that will help them achieve academically. I would encourage you to log into the Parent Portal on PowerSchool if you haven't to track grades and to check this website for upcoming assignments and homework.
Starting this week, the Grade 8s will be doing their two week Practical & Applied Arts (PAA) rotation at Campus Regina Public (CRP). The class will be at CRP every morning from 9:30 - 11:30. Classes are part of the Grade 8 PAA curriculum. In mathematics, we have finished our first unit of study (Square Roots and the Pythagorean Theorem). Students have started a project to create Theodorus Wheels in order to demonstrate their understand of the concepts we learned in the unit. Projects are tentatively due October 10th. In science, we are continuing our study of the Optics and Light unit. We have looked at how light can be separated into colours, how light is reflected and the Law of Reflection, and will start to look at refraction this week. In other news, our class held a bake sale last Friday to raise funds for Terry Fox. As a class, we managed to raise $434. 70! Thanks to all the parents / guardians who volunteered to help make treats for the bake sale. It was a great success! As a result, the class won themselves a pyjama day afternoon, complete with a movie and use of electronics on Thursday, September 28th. |
